Regular contributor, Deborah Caulfield, tells us her opinion on The Undateables , a three-part series following a group of people with disabilities as they navigate the world of dating. The Undateables was neither documentary nor reality TV. It was a down-market gawp fest for those who could watch it feel better about their lives. I agree, but not everyone needs to go on a date. Do they? Dating is a stupid activity. Dating is to relationships what interviews are to job — unreal and irrelevant.
See the gallery. Luke has used his Tourette’s syndrome to forge a career as a stand-up comedian but it is hindering his search for love. Richard has Asperger’s syndrome. Penny has a genetic disorder that means has extremely brittle bones.

It is now eight years ago that Disability Match started as a dating community for disabled singles in the UK. Of course, online dating was not new and there were already a couple of niche disabled dating sites, but these were mainly global sites with a huge bias towards the American disability community. What the UK needed was a disabled dating site that would be part of the local community and provide a secure and friendly environment where UK singles who had some form of disability — visible or hidden — could reach out and contact potential friends and lovers living within a reasonable distance.
During the last decade a lot has happened in the UK for disabled daters. When the site launched it was obvious that disabled people were often avid internet users and that social media would play a huge role in developing the community. We have an active Facebook page where we post news and original content on a daily basis and a busy Twitter feed with many active followers.
) has, in the case of The Undateables, been inflamed by strong “People don’t really use dating agencies anymore, they’d rather go To safeguard the anonymity of the respondents, pseudonyms are used throughout.
Written by Beatriz Liberatti on March 4 Tobi Green-Adenowo, 26, who suffers from brittle bone disease, went on the show for a chance at dating but left with the dream of changing how disabled people of colour are represented in the media. One of the things I like about The Undateables, despite the name, is that it gives disabled people a space to fit in within media and make it what they want.
After meeting up with a dating agency, Green was matched with Melvin, a retail assistant from West London. Even though the experience was overwhelmingly positive, Green was unable to find love in The Undateables. Her bubbly personality did catch the eye of a few suitors, who have been sliding into her DMs since the show. It is quite nice because I have never had that before. Although she has been in relationships in the past, going on her date with Melvin was the first real date she had ever been on.
The main reason Green chose to do the show was that she felt it would be a safe environment and an opportunity to get over her apprehensions of dating. Besides that, Green shares the same concerns we all have when meeting someone for the first time. Green was initially wary to be part of the show, due to its name, but thought it would be great for her personal growth and her application was approved almost instantly. According to Green, the only disabled person of colour in UK television is a man, but she hopes to be the woman to change that.
I had considered myself undateable for a long time. And as a disabled person who felt that way I was far from alone. Most disabled people want and need the same things as their able-bodied peers and love, romance and sex are no exception. Many disabled people find it difficult to get into romantic relationships because we are given the very strong sense from the world around us, that we are not viable partners, that we are unattractive due to disability and that the dating game is very much one to which we are not invited.
In researching for this piece, I have been in touch with three participants on the show who all said that their personal experience of the team working on the show was a positive one and something that they are pleased to have done.
